ON ICONIC BORDERLAND LEGENDS,
JUAN GABRIEL & “MECHE.”
Sunday, August25th – 2 p.m. to 5 p.m.
On August the 25th, from 2-5 pm, Pupfish L.L.C. will introduce to the USA the book: “No Soy Meche – La De Juan Gabriel”. The event will take place at All That Music & Video -6800 Gateway Blvd East in El Paso, Texas. The book, available in Spanish, chronicles the life of Mercedes Alvarez “Meche,” and her relationship with iconic singer, Adan Luna, aka Juan Gabriel. The event is open to the public and “Meche” will be on hand for personalized book signings and to candidly answer any questions. The book will be available for purchase in-store for $19.95
Meche, now in her early 70’s, is the only living person who knew the true Juan Gabriel and the secret private life that the famous singer successfully hid from the public and his fans. “Meche” states: “Poverty brought us together while fame and fortune separated us”. Meche was instrumental in starting Juan Gabriel’s career and is featured in several of his songs including the song Juan named after her, “Meche”. She was also featured in many of Juan Gabriel films including “El Noa Noa” (1981) and “Hasta Que Te Conocí” (2016).
According to the book creator, Joseph Carlson “I started this project because after Juan Gabriel’s death many of his fans kept telling me they wanted to know the real life history of the legendary singer. I hired a professional Mexican author, Fausto Lozano Lara, who spent nearly one-year interviewing “Meche” and reviewing her personal memoirs and photos; many which date back several decades”.
The book is not just for Juan Gabriel fans because it brings to life the results of trauma, and childhood sexual abuse. The book introduces the reader to these taboo subjects and coincides with the popular #MeToo movement. “As a therapist I see a big need in the Hispanic community for sexual abuse prevention and how to deal with childhood trauma and this book introduces the reader to this reality”, states Mr. Carlson.
